Lesson 14: SimuReal by Donald Klein

by Therese Ong

The purpose of SumuReal
is to o bring together key members of an organization or a community in a way that allows them to:
(a) experience/learn more about their interactions with one another
(b) work on real issues
(c) make decisions within a compressed time frame, and
(d) gain skills and understandings they can use to deal more effectively with future challenges in their “back home” setting.
SimuReal can be used to
shorten the time it takes to make or implement decisions, too “test drive” a restructuring plan before it is implemented, to address a complex problem or decision ,to uncover the structural/procedural blocks to solving a problem effectively and when the organization is prepared to engage in self-examination.

The range of participants is from 35 - 125 persons. The type of participants can be both internal and external stakeholders, and same function or multifuction participants.
The SimuReal event takes place in a large room which, when the participants arrive, becomes a microcosm of the organization in action. The departments or other organizational units are located in different parts of the room according to their place in the actual organization. This is the ‘Simu’ part of Simu-Real. The ‘Real’ part is the task or project that the organization will undertake. The task is conceived by a planning committee, whose members are drawn from the organizational units. The committee prepares all aspects of the Simu-Real event including the room layout and the decision making process.
